Roller blinds or day & night blinds: what's the difference and which to choose

Both options attach without drilling the frame and are installed equally fast — but they solve different problems.

Roller blind on a window

How a roller blind works

A single piece of fabric winds onto a tube above the opening and lowers to the height you want using a chain or spring mechanism. The lower the blind is lowered, the less light gets into the room — the adjustment is simple and easy to understand from day one.

How day & night blinds work

A day & night blind is made of two fabric layers — solid and sheer horizontal stripes of equal width. By sliding the layers against each other, you can line up the sheer stripes (the room stays bright, but the interior is hard to see from outside), line up the solid stripes (the room is darkened), or set any position in between. The blind's height doesn't need to change at all for this.

Light and privacy — the key difference

A roller blind works on an "all or nothing by height" principle: to open the top of the window and keep the bottom covered, it has to be stopped exactly in the right spot. Day & night blinds adjust light transmission across the whole window height at once, which makes them more convenient where you want natural daylight but no direct view from outside — a ground-floor living room, a kitchen facing the street, a bedroom next to a neighbouring house.

Care and wear

A roller blind has one mechanism and one piece of fabric — fewer parts, simpler care, and the fabric can be wiped with a damp sponge. A day & night blind has a more complex mechanism because of its two fabric layers, but with careful use it lasts just as long; both systems offer moisture-resistant fabrics for the kitchen.

Price and what affects it

The final price for both systems depends on the same factors: the width and height of the opening, the fabric you choose (basic, blackout, moisture-resistant) and the control method — chain, spring mechanism or electric drive. You can see an estimated price for your own size straight away in roller blind calculator or day & night blinds calculator.

FAQ

Can day & night blinds be installed in a kitchen?

Yes, for kitchens, day & night blinds come in moisture-resistant fabrics that resist steam and grease; they wipe clean just like regular roller fabrics.

Which system is cheaper?

For the same size and control type, a roller blind is usually a little cheaper — thanks to its simpler mechanism with a single layer of fabric.

Can both systems be fitted with an electric motor?

Yes, both systems are available with electric control — the calculator on each blind type's page shows the current option and price.
